Dear all,

In any helping profession, it is often essential to have a certain knowledge of a client's language in order to better understand and respond to them. A basic grasp of a dialect would also help in simple engagement and assessment too. The Society of Social Work Students (SSWS) recognises these needs, and would like to provide a workshop for our fellow social work students, as well as those in the various different service and helping professions too.

The workshop offers participants a choice of two dialects: Hokkien and Cantonese.

The workshop will focus on a very basic understanding of the dialect. Interested individuals without any knowledge of the respective dialects are encouraged to attend. Below is a rough guideline of what we will be learning:

Day 1

- Greetings

- Self-introduction

- Respectful terms of address

- Pronouns

- Numbers

*syllabus subject to changes

Day 2
