This year our theme will be MISSION I M POSSIBLE! The camp will be good time for you to know more about Social Work and also make new friends! (: We will be playing games such as RUNNING MAN and many other fun and exciting games! Here are the details for our camp:

SSWS FOC 2012 Organising Committee Recruitment

Hi dearest social work friends (:

SSWS will be having its annual Social Work Freshmen Orientation Camp (FOC) 2012 in mid-July, after placement (the tentative dates are 17th – 19th July 2012). The purpose of this camp is to invite the freshies who're interested in social work to join us and learn more about the profession! 

We are looking for highly committed, passionate budding social work students (YOU!!!!!) to join us in planning a memorable camp for the freshies! If you are keen to be part of this journey, do sign up as a camp committee member. We are looking for
1) Admin Personnel- Providing support with the administrative matters of the camp e.g. meeting minutes, contacting the campers etc
- In charge of campers and facilitator

2) Marketing/Publicity Officer
- In-charge of publicity and sourcing of sponsorship/fundraising for the camp
- Design of FOC shirt
- Design publicity materials (posters, flyers, etc)
- Sponsorship

3) Programmers
- Planning of game activities/programmes throughout the whole camp            
- In charge of game masters

4) Logistics Personnel
- Provide support in the logistics material before and during the camp

SSWS Hokkien Dialect Workshop

Hello all! (:

SSWS will be organizing a 2-part Hokkien Dialect Workshop on 1/2/2012 and 8/2/2012. The purpose of this workshop is to equip social work majors with basic Hokkien dialect vocabulary so as to facilitate their Hokkien dialect conversational skills.

This is especially necessary because language is crucial to communication and with basic Hokkien dialect conversational skills, social work majors can better communicate with the older generation , which will definitely help them in their social work practice in future.

Basic Hokkien dialect vocabulary in areas such as greetings, family members, directions, food and so on will be covered. The workshop will be conducted by Mr Lim Ben Liang, who is proficient in Hokkien and has more than sufficient knowledge to teach the basics of Hokkien dialect. Details of our workshop are below. Light refreshments will be provided.

OSWA Presentation & President’s Tea Reception for Social Workers 2011 – 14 November 2011, Monday
 The Outstanding Social Worker Award (OSWA) is into its 12th year this year and the Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW) is most honoured to be given this privilege to host this meaningful occasion again.  This year, the President will be presenting the awards to the winners of the Outstanding Social Worker Award and the Promising Social Worker Award at this Tea Reception on 14 November 2011, Monday, at the Istana, Banquet Hall from 3:00 to 5:00pm.

Do let us know soonest or by 1 November (as some time is required for security clearance), if you’re available & keen to help out at this event from 11:30am to 5:30pm.  Some of the volunteer duties include:-
·   Ushers – Entrance, Security Screening,
·   Wardens - Car-Parks, Shuttle-Bus, Catering stations
·   Registration (& security clearance) etc.
(Lunch will be provided for volunteers)

Want to be a ROCKER and make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children??


JOIN US IN OUR UPCOMING YOUTH EXPEDITION PROJECT (YEP) TO NOIDA, INDIA!

rocknoida’11 is a 14 day YEP which is going to be held in December 2011. It is a follow up project to rocknoida’10.  For the latter project, some of the issues that we noticed about the community include the lack of basic amenities such as proper shelter, sanitization, safety and nutrition. There were also concerns raised by the volunteers who informed us that parents generally see education as secondary, compared to earning money to meet their basic needs.

While rockNoida’10 was more focused at engaging children from the Prayas slum community, the main objective of this year’s project will be engaging family and getting their involvement in supporting their children’s education. Throughout the 14 days, we will be doing a mini renovation for the two classrooms which the children go to for their lessons with the volunteers. We hope to make the classroom a more vibrant and conducive environment for the children to study in. Apart from that, we are also going to conduct fun and enriching workshops that include English, Math, Arts & Craft, Music, Dance and Drama.

On top of that, we will be conducting home visits to selected families, hoping to engage with more families as well as to involve them in our activities. With the help of local volunteers, we hope to learn more about their situation and spread the message of the importance of their children’s education.

How's your first week of classes? SSWS is organising a "B2S" bbq on Fri, 21 Jan 7pm, at East Coast Park area D pit 34. Come and meet other SW peeps, chill out and enjoy the evening with great food and awesome company. Don't be shy!

All food will be from BBQ Wholesale (halal). Vegetarian food will be provided and there will be a SEPARATE pit just for our veggie-loving friends. Best of all, it's completely FREE!!!

By car: Park at Carpark D2. Walk in.
By bus: Take 401 from Bedok Interchange. Alight at the 13th stop (Carpark D1), follow the footpath to pit 34.

COME JOIN US this coming April to celebrate the Accreditation of Social Work Practice and to promote awareness of Social Work among non-social work friends!

“The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, together with the National Council of Social Service and Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW), is implementing Accreditation for Social Workers and Social Service Practitioners. The primary objective of accreditation is to ensure professional standards among social work practitioners. The accreditation system is targeted for implementation on 1 April 2009.”

The Society of Social Work Students (SSWS) will be having activities to celebrate Social Workers’ Day!

Date: April 1st and 2nd
Venue: Along AS1/AS6 walkway
All we need you to do is to bring 3 non-social work friends to our booth and you will receive mystery prizes (limited) while your friends get to play games with us to learn more about the social work profession! We will also end off this event with a mass celebration on 2nd of April at 5.45pm!

Do you ever feel that you have difficulties communicating with your grandparents?

Or for future social workers and social work students who are going for placement this semester, are you worried that you will have problems interacting with your clients because they only know how to speak in dialects which you seldom, or never, have experience in?

Or you just want to understand what the cast in Hong Kong drama series and movies are saying in their smooth Cantonese language?

Have no fears! The Society of Social Work Students is here again with another round of its annual dialect workshops which there will be experienced instructors teaching you Hokkien and Cantonese dialects. These workshops are guaranteed to be interactive and fun!

Hokkien dialect workshop
Dates: 19/03/09 (Thursday) and 20/03/09 (Friday)
Time: 6.30pm to 8.30pm

Cantonese dialect workshop
Dates: 25/03/09 (Wednesday) and 26/03/09 (Thursday)
Time: 6.30pm to 8.30pm

There will be 2 workshops teaching Hokkien and Cantonese dialects separately. You can choose to attend either one of them, or even both of them. The fees for the Cantonese and the Hokkien workshops are the same; $8 for SSWS members and $10 for non-members.

Loads of thanks to those people who have made our SOCIAL WORK CAPTAIN BALL SHOWDOWN a successful one! Hope it had helped you all to destress admist all the revision! ;D

Hopefully by this time, everyone has more or less finished your projects and is preparing for exams!!
