      Dear friends,

      As the semester is drawing to an end, some of you may be wondering whether you should pursue honours or embark on your career. Some of you may be wondering what is honours year all about? What is the workload like? What is ISM/Thesis? What's in it for me?

      Fret not! We, your friends in the Social Work Honours year class, hereby invite you to "Honest Breakfast with the Honours Class": Get lowdowns on what's really coming your way in Honours year, right out of the horses' mouths!. We hope that through this session, we are able to foster greater bond with you, our fellow social work mates, and to answer any of your queries about what Honours life is all about. Yes! We aim to tell you everything you are dying to know about level 4000 Modules, ISMs, Thesis etc etc.

      Some of the honours year students are keen to share and would be setting aside their valuable time just for you! So, if you want the lowdowns, don't miss out on this opportunity!' This is an informal, free and easy session. So if you are free, pull down your friends and join us this coming Tuesday 14 April, 10am-11am at Arts canteen (the area reserved for staffs from 12-2pm).

      We have arrived near the exam period once again, but that means it's time for some SPORTING GREATNESS! Join us on Thursday 16th April, 9am @SRC grandstand.

      We'll be kicking off with some awesome captain's ball action, lunch break at 12, followed by frisbee from 2-5.

      SSWS Dialect workshops! Lai ah!! ;D

      Do you ever feel that you have difficulties communicating with your grandparents?

      Or for future social workers and social work students who are going for placement this semester, are you worried that you will have problems interacting with your clients because they only know how to speak in dialects which you seldom, or never, have experience in?

      Or you just want to understand what the cast in Hong Kong drama series and movies are saying in their smooth Cantonese language?

      Have no fears! The Society of Social Work Students is here again with another round of its annual dialect workshops which there will be experienced instructors teaching you Hokkien and Cantonese dialects. These workshops are guaranteed to be interactive and fun!

      Hokkien dialect workshop
      Dates: 19/03/09 (Thursday) and 20/03/09 (Friday)
      Time: 6.30pm to 8.30pm

      Cantonese dialect workshop
      Dates: 25/03/09 (Wednesday) and 26/03/09 (Thursday)
      Time: 6.30pm to 8.30pm

      There will be 2 workshops teaching Hokkien and Cantonese dialects separately. You can choose to attend either one of them, or even both of them. The fees for the Cantonese and the Hokkien workshops are the same; $8 for SSWS members and $10 for non-members.

Other challenging and interesting activities in the camp prepare to give you a broad range of experience and opportunities to indulge in self-directed experiential learning.

      Hi everyone (SW Majors Year 1 to Year 4)!!!!

      Loads of thanks to those people who have made our SOCIAL WORK CAPTAIN BALL SHOWDOWN a successful one! Hope it had helped you all to destress admist all the revision! ;D

      Now, the SSWS is bringing you another welfare project that will cause you to squeal in joy:

      you can study in our observation room for the reading week!!!!!

      Hopefully by this time, everyone has more or less finished your projects and is preparing for exams!! Yup, the exam period is just around the corner and to perk everyone up during this mugging period, SSWS has prepared GOODIE BAGS for everyone!!! It's on a first come first serve basis k, so faster come and grab it!!!!! So where to collect????

      CAPTAIN's BALL SHOWDOWN II!!

      Kaiyin: WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE 18th OF APRIL...?
      Saleha:       SW CAPTAIN'S BALL SHOWDOWN IS BACK!!!

      Dear Social Work friends,

      As you already know, our social work cohorts have always been a large close-knitted and privileged group. To create more opportunities for inter- year bonding, the seniors are organising a game of captain's ball for all of us, and especially for YOU!

      This would also be a wonderful opportunity for us to network before entering the field, either for placements or to work, and to "bombard" your seniors with questions and sharing of views before we say our goodbye to our juniors! So come, let your hair down, and enjoy an afternoon of fun, laughter, bonding and de-stressing before the exams! YOU deserve it after a whole semester of lessons and assignments!

      This special event will be held on 18th April, 2pm onwards. More details will be released at a later date.


      If you are keen to participate, please do not hesitate to sign up in teams of 4 (there will be inter- year team mergers) and email your respective coordinators by 14 April:

      Study Room for Reading Week

      Dear members!


      Exciting news for everyone.

      The time has come to face examinations yet again, and as part of our exam welfare package this semester, SSWS has booked the department observation room for study purposes!

      The room will be open during the following hours:

      21st - 24th April 9.00am - 5.15pm


      25th April 9.00am - 4.45pm


      Spaces are limited and are on a first-come-first-serve basis.

      Observation room is at AS4 B1-09.

      The room would be used for studying purposes, as such group discussion is strongly discouraged. You or your group will be asked to vacate if deemed to be causing too much disruption. Thank you for understanding.

      Hey all Funky Social Work Majors!!

      In conjunction with the upcoming Social Workers' Day (15th April), we are organising a Social Workers' Week in NUS just for you!! We have lined up some activities, so do join us in forging a stronger Social Work Identity!! Take these dates down!


      1. Monday, 7 April 2008, 12-2pm

      • Location: Benches along AS6 Walkway!

      • Join us in Launching "Pass it on!", a game for social work majors! Complete as many Action Cards as you can and pass on the cards, to win exclusive prizes!! Come on down to find out more!

      • Take Photos with your friends and print it out on-the-spot at our booth!
